Airbus Terms and Abbreviations (Selection)

V-Speeds

V-Speed Term
V1 - The highest speed (V) during take-off that you can reject the takeoff and still stop on the runway.
- The lowest speed from which a takeoff can be safely continued within the takeoff distance after an engine failure at the critical engine failure speed.
V2 Takeoff safety speed (V) the aircraft attains no later than an altitude of 35 ft (11 m) and is maintained during the 2nd segment of takeoff with one engine failed.
VA The maximum speed (V) at which a full control deflection in one direction should be made in normal or alternate law.
VAPP Speed (V) for flying down the approach.
VD / MD Maximum structural design limit speed (V) and Mach.
VF Design Flap speed (V).
VFE Maximum Flap Extended speed (V).
VFEN Predictive VFE at next flap/slat position.
VFTO Final Takeoff speed (V).
VLE Maximum gear Extension speed (V), often lower than the operating speed to prevent gear door damage.
VLO Maximum gear Operating speed (V), which means the max speed for the gear being down.
VLOF Lift-Off speed (V).
VLS Lowest Selectable speed (V).
VMAX Airbus for the MAXimum speed (V) for the current configuration, represented by a black and red strip at the top of the airspeed indication.
VMCA Minimum speed (V) in the Air that if one engine fails and the other is at TO thrust, you can still control the aircraft with the primary flight controls up to a bank of 5 degrees.
VMCG Minimum speed (V) on the Ground that if one engine fails and the other is at TO thrust, you can still control the aircraft with the primary flight controls.
VMO / MMO Maximum Operating speed (V), also has MMO for maximum Mach number.
VR Rotate speed (V). The speed at which the pilot pulls back on the stick to pitch the airplane to the takeoff attitude.
VREF REFerence speed (V) for a normal approach at the 50-foot height.
VS Stalling speed (V) at which airplane is controllable.
VS1 Stalling speed (V) or minimum steady flight speed obtained in a specified configuration.
VSO Stalling speed (V) or minimum steady flight speed in the landing configuration.
VSW Airbus for when the Stall Warning will activate, represented by a black and red strip at the bottom of the airspeed indicator, when there has been a failure to affect the flight control laws.
VX Speed (V) for best angle of climb.
VY Speed (V) for best rate of climb.
VαMAX Airbus speed (V) for the MAXimum angle of attack (α) that the pilot can achieve in normal law, shown by the top of a red strip at the bottom of the airspeed indicator.
VαPROT Airbus for the speed (V) that the angle of attack (α) PROTection will become active to stop the aircraft from stalling, shown as being the top of the black and amber strip at the bottom of the airspeed indicator.

Additional Speeds

V-Speed Term
F Minimum speed at which the Flaps may be retracted at takeoff (i.e., CONF 2/3). Also, the minimum speed in approach when in CONF 2 or 3
S Minimum speed at which the Slats may be retracted at takeoff. Also, the minimum speed in approach when in CONF 1.
O or GD Green Dot speed, engine-out Operating speed with flaps up, best lift-to-drag ratio speed, also corresponds to final takeoff speed.
